Sarah’s Social Impact Initiative:

As Miss Chinese Boston 2023, I would like to:

  1. Communicate — Spread awareness of prevalent issues that Asian Americans face, such as, but not limited to, the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes, the bamboo ceiling, the model minority myth, and the mental health taboo

  2. Connect — Build connections within the Chinese American community in Boston, as well as the larger Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community, through various arts and cultural events

  3. Civic Engagement — Empower civic engagement within the Chinese community by supporting voter registration efforts for non-native English speakers of Chinese descent

When I was a little girl, my mom packed my lunch for school. As I sat in the cafeteria with my stinky tofu, white rice, and bok choy, while all the other kids had cheeseburgers and tater tots, I couldn’t help but feel left out. At some point, despite my love for Chinese food, I asked my mom to stop packing my lunches, so I could eat the same lunch as my peers. I simply didn’t feel “American enough.”

As I look back on my childhood, I realize that assimilation came at the expense of honoring my Chinese American identity. Now as a young woman, I now see that there’s not one homogenous way of being American. Or Chinese American. As the Chinese American Heritage Foundation’s Mission (CAHF) implies, the beauty of this country lies in our commitment to embracing every person’s identity, religion, and passion. These qualities make us unique.

For me, being a first-generation Chinese American woman means that I live life to the fullest, love my authentic self, and encourage others to do the same. My identity shines during holiday celebrations, where I cheer on lion dancers at the annual Lunar New Year parade in Boston, but it’s also prevalent in private moments when I have conversations in Taishanese with my grandparents in Chinatown.

Ms. Sarah Chu Crowned
Miss Chinese Boston 2023

Ms. Sarah Chu was crowned as Miss Chinese Boston on 22 Oct 2023.

Sarah (朱玉珊) Chu is a 26-year-old, first-generation Chinese American woman born in Boston’s Chinatown. She is proudly bilingual (Hoisan, English), as her family grew up in Guangdong, China. She graduated from Wellesley College with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Mathematics. Currently, Sarah is an IT Consultant, where she improves digital experiences for Fortune 500 clients.

Beyond academia and consulting, Sarah is a passionate dancer. She began dancing at the age of four and studied ballet, tap, and jazz for 14 years. Since then, she has trained in 15 different dance styles. Sarah currently competes as a Latin ballroom dancer and has earned several titles across the US.

She is also an accomplished writer and activist. “Shattering the Bamboo Ceiling,” an article about the Asian American leadership gap in corporate America, was the most read post in her company blog’s history. Sarah enters cultural pageantry to amplify awareness to the issues the Chinese American community faces. As Miss Chinese Boston 2023, she aims to showcase that beauty is not what we see on the surface, but rather, is in the depth of our character and the breadth of our impact on our community.
